Good News

To Set the Burdened Free

Jesus returned to Galilee powerful in the Spirit. News that he was back spread through the countryside. He taught in their meeting places to everyone’s acclaim and pleasure.

He came to Nazareth where he had been reared. As he always did on the Sabbath, he went to the meeting place. When he stood up to read, he was handed the scroll of the prophet Isaiah. Unrolling the scroll, he found the place where it was written,

     God’s Spirit is on me;

          he’s chosen me to preach the Message of good news to the poor,

          recovery of sight to the blind,

          to announce, “This is God’s year to act!”

He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the assistant, and sat down. Every eye in the place was on him, intent. Then he started in, “You’ve just heard Scripture make history. It came true just now in this place.”

Luke 4:14-21 (The Message)

This passage and the Isaiah passage (Isaiah 61:1-4) which it quotes have long been life verses for me.  As a Christian, as a follower of Christ, I feel called to live my life in such a way that others experience the love and presence of God through my actions and my presence.  We have been charged with being a people who follow the ways of Christ.  We, as ambassadors of Christ, are charged with being bearers of Good News.  We are to live with the vision of bringing good news to the poor, the outcast, the marginalized, and the medically challenged.  We are to be a people who meet others where they are and help make a tangible difference in their lives.  We are to be about the work of God's kingdome here and now.

How are you lving in such a way that others see the embodied presence and love of God in the way that you live?  How are we as the church living out the gospel, the good news of God's kingdom here on earth as it already is fully in heaven.  How are people receiving glimpses of grace, sightings of unconditional love, peeks of care?  How is Jesus made manifest in you and the way that you live?

God pours forth God's blessings on each one of us.  Because we are continually loved and nourished by God, we then show love for one another.  Out of the overflowing of God's love and grace, because our cup runs over we cannot contain it, we offer Christ, we offer love, we offer Good News to all that we meet.    We stay connected to God who is the source of this love and grace and out of that connection we help others to be placed the path and awareness of God's abiding love and presence.

As we look toward the upcoming season of Lent, how will we be more intentional about ofeering Christ through our words and actions?

Let Us Pray:

Immanuel, God who is ever present with us, help our very lives to reflect your light and love into this dark and hurting world.  Help us to surrender all that we are to you.  May we be motivated out of love and not duty.  Give us eyes to see others as you see them.  Give us ears to hear those who cry out in need.  Use all that we are as your vessels.  In the name of Jesus, love incarnate, we pray.  Amen.
